A renewed industry push to reduce insurance taxes has put affordability back on the agenda for Australian households and businesses, including tradies who already face rising operating costs.
The core argument is straightforward: when taxes and levies are added to premiums, the final bill can become harder to absorb, particularly for sole traders and small teams managing vehicles, tools, public liability and workshop risks.

For trade business owners, the issue is not simply whether premiums go up or down at renewal. Insurance is often tied to whether you can enter a site, satisfy a head contractor, keep a financed ute on the road or replace stolen tools quickly enough to avoid cancelled jobs. If cover becomes too expensive, the temptation can be to reduce limits, remove optional sections or delay updates to sums insured. That can create a bigger problem later if a claim exposes a gap.

Taxes such as stamp duty and emergency services-related levies vary across jurisdictions, but their impact is usually felt in the same place: the total premium shown on the renewal notice. A modest percentage increase can become more painful when it is applied across multiple policies. A carpenter with tool cover, public liability, commercial motor and contract works exposure may feel the compounding effect more sharply than someone with a single personal policy.

The affordability debate also intersects with underinsurance. Replacement costs for tools, materials, plant and vehicles have shifted in recent years, while job values and contract requirements can change quickly. If a tradie keeps last year’s limits to hold down the premium, the policy may no longer reflect the real cost of getting back to work after theft, fire, storm damage or a liability incident. It is worth taking time to estimate practical sums insured before accepting a renewal or cutting cover.

There is no guarantee that tax reform would automatically deliver large savings for every policyholder, because premiums are influenced by claims costs, reinsurance, weather exposure, business activity, location and insurer appetite. However, removing avoidable cost layers could give small businesses more room to maintain appropriate protection rather than treating insurance as a discretionary expense.

The practical step for tradies is to review cover before renewal pressure hits. Check whether your business has changed, whether contract requirements have increased, whether tool values are current and whether any exclusions affect the work you actually do. If premiums are biting, it is worth considering the option to compare policies and adjust structure carefully than to cancel key protections outright.
