It is also worth checking what type of claim each policy is designed to meet. Life cover may support dependants after death, while trauma cover may pay on specified serious illnesses, total and permanent disability cover may respond to a lasting inability to work, and income protection may provide a monthly benefit after a waiting period. Similar names across insurers do not always mean identical definitions, exclusions or benefit triggers.

For families comparing policies, the lesson is to look beyond the headline premium. Claim definitions, disclosure obligations, exclusions, premium structure, ownership, beneficiary arrangements and future upgrade options can all affect value. If a policy was arranged years ago, reviewing it with a financial adviser can help identify whether the cover is still suitable or whether changes should be made carefully.

Claims data shows why life insurance matters, but it also highlights the cost of letting cover drift. The best outcome is not necessarily the cheapest policy, or the largest benefit amount. It is cover that fits the family’s current risks, remains affordable, and is understood before a claim ever needs to be made.
