Tool Theft Puts Portable Property Cover Back in Focus

Why small operators should treat equipment records as part of their risk plan

Tool Theft Puts Portable Property Cover Back in Focus?w=400

Fresh insurance industry attention on theft from vehicles, job sites and storage areas is a timely reminder for Australian home service operators: tools are not just equipment, they are the business.
When a cleaner, gardener, handyman, mobile technician or domestic maintenance provider loses essential gear, the financial hit can extend well beyond the replacement cost.

For many small operators, portable equipment moves between the home, the vehicle and client premises every day. That mobility is convenient, but it can also create grey areas in insurance. A home and contents policy may not respond to business property. A basic business pack may have limits, exclusions or conditions for items left unattended in vehicles. Cover can also depend on where the theft occurred, how the items were secured and whether there is adequate proof of ownership.

The practical issue is claim readiness. Insurers commonly need evidence such as purchase receipts, serial numbers, photos, service records and police reports. If a business has grown gradually, with tools accumulated over years, those records may be scattered or incomplete. That can slow a claim or reduce the amount paid, particularly where replacement values have increased.

Home service businesses should consider a simple equipment audit. List each major item, note its current replacement cost, photograph it, and record where it is usually stored or transported. Operators can also estimate replacement values as part of a broader review of business assets and interruption exposure.

Key insurance questions to check include:

  • whether portable tools and equipment are covered away from the main premises;
  • what sub-limits apply to theft from vehicles or temporary job sites;
  • whether overnight storage conditions apply;
  • how hired, borrowed or client-supplied equipment is treated;
  • whether loss of tools could also trigger business interruption cover.

This is also a reminder that cheaper cover is not always simpler when a claim occurs. For domestic service businesses, the right policy wording should reflect how work is actually done: mobile, time-sensitive and often inside clients' homes. A broker or adviser can help compare wording, limits and exclusions against the operator's real working routine.

The takeaway is practical rather than alarming. Tool theft cannot always be prevented, but it can be planned for. Strong records, secure storage habits and suitable portable property cover can help a small business recover faster and keep client commitments on track.
